A piece on former Fulham forward, and a well known player and coach in non-League – George Georgiou:

George Jordaris Georgiou had a long and successful playing career in non-League football. Brought up in Camden Town, north London, George used to play on the pitches at Market Road, and for anyone from north London, who is a fan of football, Market Road’s pitches are a very well known footballing place. It was there that the the young George Georgiou played for a Market Road triallists team against a Fulham side at an end of season match. George’s talent caught the eye of the Fulham coaching staff in that game, and the longtime Arsenal supporter was invited to Fulham for the following pre-season. He got to play as a professional footballer for Fulham for a while, making five competitive appearances for the west London club, when they were in the Third Division. However, George’s subsequent playing career would see the goalscoring and highly competitive forward play for the likes of Purfleet (he scored 109 goals for them during his time there), Leyton, Dagenham & Redbridge, Kings Lynn Town and Haringey Borough.

As well as playing at a really good standard of non-League football, Georgiou would also play his football in Cyprus (George has Cypriot and Irish heritage), for five years. Playing for clubs such as AEL Limassol and Everoras Paphos. Sicne retiring from playing the game in the late 2000’s, George has gone into coaching and management. A charismatic and passionate coach, and a real footballing person, George has been coaching in non-League football for well over a decade. Some of his most memorable moments in non-League football included his tenure at current step four club New Salamis. During his time in charge of New Salamis, (George was at the club in a coaching capacity for 11 years) he helped them to the then 2015/16 FA Sunday Cup final, which they won at Selhurst Park. After excelling in the KOPA League under the leadership of George, he would also remain in charge  of them, for their transition into non-League football. As he helped them into step six of the non-League system, before leaving the club in 2019.

George Georgiou also helped to keep Spartan South Midlands Premier Division side Colney Heath up, last season, as they avoided relegation to step six. Currently at FC Romania, (George returned to step five side FC Romania as assistant manager and director of football for the start of the 2023/24 season, having previously coached with them before), George is using all of his fine experience in the game to help the club, as they look to secure a play-off spot in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division this season. There’s a lot to look back on for George in his playing career in the game, and also his coaching career (so far), and the 51 year old still has a lot to give back to the game in a coaching capacity.
