Camden United (Midweek) 2-4 Wimpole Mews: (My match report from Market Road Pitches)

In a Premier Division fixture (on Thursday) of the Islington Midweek Football League, Camden United Midweek faced Wimpole Mews, at Market Road Pitches. Camden United started this match in eight place in the Premier Division standings, after five league matches played. Wimpole Mews started this game in second place in the Premier Division table, after five league matches played. Wimpole Mews would win this match 4-2.

Camden United started this game positively. After Rhys Hajro had received the ball out on the right-hand side of the pitch, the Camden United player would show some really good skill and quick feet to take the ball beyond two defenders from the opposing team, and into the right-hand side of the Wimpole penalty area. From there Rhys Hajro would whip a good effort narrowly wide of the Wimpole goalkeeper’s right-hand post. Camden United’s centre-forward, Kassim Omar, would then power a decent effort over the Wimpole goal from distance, before a Wimpole player would then hit an effort wide of the Camden United goal, also from distance.

The youthful Camden United side would continue to play their football well, during the relatively early stages of the first half. A good move from Leon Louis’ side would see Rhys Hajro receive Samuel Sisse’s pass on the right-hand side of the pitch, before then playing a good pass into the path of Kassim Omar, down the right-hand side of the Wimpole penalty area, from where the Camden United striker’s lofted effort was well tipped over his crossbar by the goalkeeper. A couple of minutes later and Rhys Hajro would see his good dipping effort on the Wimpole goal (from over 20 yards out) hit the Wimpole crossbar, as Camden United continued to push for the opening goal of this contest.

Although Camden United had started the game better, in terms of chances created, Wimpole would soon start to really grow into the game, during the remainder of the first half, as Camden had to defend their goal well. After Camden United’s goalkeeper Mayto Sotomayor had done well to push away a powerful low Wimpole free-kick effort on his goal, from distance, the Wimpole number nine would head an effort narrowly wide of the Camden goal, after meeting a well delivered corner-kick into the penalty area. Camden United did go on to create one additional chance just before half-time, however.

For that final chance of the first half, Elias Moreno and Rhys Hajro would exchange passes down the right-hand side of the pitch, as Elias Moreno then received the ball inside of the Wimpole penalty area. His low effort across goal was well read and cleared off the goal-line by an opposing team’s defender. During the opening stages of the second half, and shortly after Wimpole had a goal which had been disallowed by the referee, they would take the lead in this game. And the opening goal of the game came courtesy of a clinical low finish from the penalty spot, after a penalty had been awarded to Wimpole following a foul on one of their players inside the Camden United penalty area.

Things got even better for Wimpole, who soon made it 2-0. This time a move which had started down the left flank, would see the ball worked into the centre of the Camden United box, effectively. There was a great block from a Camden United defender following a Wimpole effort. However, on the follow-up the Wimpole number seven would finish into the goal, 0-2. Mayto Sotomayor would make a good save following a powerfully hit low effort on his goal from 24 yards out, before Camden United reacted in style, by scoring two goals in quick succession.

For Camden United’s first goal of the game, Samuel Brake would finish into the goal from close range, after meeting Said Tahir’s excellent corner-kick delivery to the back post of the Wimpole goal, 1-2. Then following a decent chance for Wimpole to effectively win the game, Camden United would make it 2-2. The ball was played forward into the Wimpole penalty area, with Rhys Hajro getting on the ball inside of the box, before finishing powerfully beyond their goalkeeper, 2-2.

This game was becoming quite end to end during its latter stages, as both sides pushed for a winning goal. At one end of the pitch Kassim Omar’s looping header (after he had met a deep lofted free-kick into the Wimpole penalty area) had gone over the Wimpole goal, the other team would then, from the resulting goal-kick, go on to retake the lead. Wimpole went forward with the ball at pace, as a player had met the ball following a low cross to the right-hand side of the Camden box, with his effort being well kept out by Mayto Sotomayor. However, a teammate was then able to finish into the goal from close range on the follow-up, 2-3.

Soon after the resumption of play Wimpole would reestablish a two goal lead, to make sure of their win very late on. As their number nine (he was my player of the match from this game) would get onto the ball following a long ball upfield. After running onto it in behind of the Camden United defence, he would skilfully take the ball around the goalkeeper before tapping the ball into the goal, 2-4. This was a good and very competitive game of football, in which a very well organised Wimpole side were able to win in the end, despite a great response from Camden United (my Camden United player of the match was Rhys Hajro), who did really well to get it back to 2-2. Wimpole Mews now move up to first place in the Premier Division table, after Thursday’s win.
