As always the Premier Division of the Spartan South Midlands Football League is one of the most competitive step 5 divisions in southern England, and this season is proving to be no different. Winslow United are the current league leaders, and what a season it has been for them, so far. Winslow are on 46 points after 19 league matches played, and having played three games less than another side who are enjoying a fine season, in Biggleswade United, they lead them by two points in the table. Winslow United and Biggleswade United are two sides who have so far done really well, during the league season. But, third place Kings Langley (they were relegated from step 4 at the end of last season) and fourth place side Arlesey Town, are two other real title challengers, going into a decisive point in the season.
When you look at the league table, after Arlesey Town, you have fifth place Risborough Rangers, who at this point of the season make up the top five in the league. Following a move across from the Combined Counties Football League, Risborough Rangers have impressively accumulated 39 points from 19 league matches played. Just below the play-off positions, are Gavin Kelsey’s Cockfosters side, who continue to make good progress during his tenure at the club, so far.
As well as still being in the last 32 of the prestigious FA Vase, Cockfosters have a good record in this season’s Premier Division, of won 12, drawn three, and lost four, going into the next round of matches. They remain a side to keep an eye on during the remainder of the league season. And well done to them for enjoying their best ever run in the FA Vase, this season. After successive relegations, Haringey Borough have in my opinion, one of the very best squads in this division. They are in seventh place in the league standings, after 18 league games played. However, they can’t be ruled out from really challenging for the league title, over the next three/four months.
Following their move across from the Essex Senior League, Sawbridgeworth Town are one place below Haringey Borough, after 21 games played. Then there is last season’s play-off semi-finalists Tring Athletic, Harlow Town, and AFC Welwyn, in the league table. 12th place Harpenden Town, are one of two clubs from this league still remaining in this season’s FA Vase, and then just below them in the table are last season’s play-off finalists, Wormley Rovers, who after a difficult start to the season, have shown their quality to move up the table. Aylesbury Vale Dynamos, Baldock Town, Colney Heath, Kempston Rovers, Potton United, Crawley Green and Dunstable Town make up the remaining places in this 20 team division, going into tomorrow’s round of fixtures.
This has long been a quality step 5 division, and this season’s division is really shaping up to be both highly competitive, and also interesting to follow, for followers of non-League football.
The three top goalscorers in the Premier Division, at this point of the season:
- Louie Collier (Kings Langley) – 26.
- Harry Scott (Winslow United) – 23.
- Coree Wilson (Haringey Borough) – 19.
