Clapton Community were looking for their first league win of the 2026/27 season on Tuesday evening when they faced Saffron Walden Town at the Old Spotted Dog Ground, in an Essex Senior League fixture. Geoff Ocran’s Clapton Community side started this league fixture in 20th place in the Essex Senior League table after five league matches played. Saffron Walden Town started this match in 11th place in the league table after six league matches played. This step 5 fixture was won 1-0 by Clapton Community, in what was a memorable night for all connected with the club.
Saffron Walden Town would start the game well. And during the opening minutes of this contest Clapton’s goalkeeper, Jack Francis, would make a fine reaction save. As their captain had done well to gather Samuel Black’s volleyed effort on his goal-line, following a good lofted ball into the home team’s penalty area, by Enock Soganile. Soon after that early chance for Saffron Walden, the visitors would again go close to taking the lead. Jack Francis was again called into action, this time saving Jamal Obeng’s low effort on his goal, after he had met a lofted ball in behind the defence and into the Clapton box. However, on the follow-up Clapton defender Emmanuel Olasehinde would make a very important challenge on a Saffron Walden player to take the ball off him just in time.
In what had proved to be a close game of football, following those early chances for the visitors. Clapton would, towards the latter stages of the first half, start to create some more chances. Firstly Cameron Gordon would loop a header narrowly over the Saffron Walden goal, after meeting Joel Akuwudike’s lofted free-kick delivery into the Saffron Walden box. Then, soon afterwards and from Lewis Owiredu’s corner-kick delivery into the away team’s box, experienced Clapton player Julian Austin would see his glancing header on goal be well headed off the goal-line by Saffron Walden defender Jack Clarke.
Just before half-time, the tireless Julian Austin would do really well to run back into his penalty area to very importantly clear behind Jamal Obeng’s low cross towards a teammate at the back post. After the Saffron Walden player had taken the ball forwards at pace down the right-hand side of the Clapton penalty area. An early move during the opening minutes of the second half by Saffron Walden, would result in Jamal Obeng surging forward with the ball down the right-hand side of the pitch and into the Clapton box, where his powerful effort on goal was well parried by Jack Francis. On the follow-up Jamal Obeng would hit an effort on target again, which was well headed off the goal-line by Okwute Izuchukwu.
Saffron Walden did continue to create goalscoring chances during the early stages of the second half. However, the next notable chance of this game came the way of the home side. As substitute Andre Odeku had been alert to a loose ball inside the Saffron Walden final third, quickly taking the ball forward at pace. He would then play the ball forward the short distance to Cameron Gordon, who on his last ever appearance for the club would, from inside the away team’s box, place his effort narrowly wide of George Coton’s near post.
After Sam Deering’s floated free-kick delivery into the Clapton box had found Saffron Walden captain Jordan Gent, who had got up well. The defender’s headed effort on goal was well saved and gathered by Jack Francis, who made a good save low down. Then soon afterwards and as we approached the latter stages of this highly competitive game of football, Clapton midfielder Samba Badjana would go on a really good and skilful run forward from midfield. Having taken the ball to the edge of the Saffron Walden box, Samba Badjana would then lay the ball off into the path of Cameron Gordon. From inside the middle of the box, the centre-forward would hit a low effort on goal which was gathered by George Coton.
Clapton forward Andre Odeku had been making a great impression on this game since being brought on in place of the injured Fred Taylor, just before half-time. In the 77th minute of the game Andre Odeku would score a sensational goal which turned out to be the winner for Clapton. Andre Odeku would get to the ball well down the right, taking it forward just to the edge of the Saffron Walden penalty area, where their goalkeeper had partially rushed out of his goal. Andre Odeku looked up, spotted the goalkeeper tracking back towards his goal-line, before chipping an exquisite effort over him and into the goal, 1-0. After that great goal to give Clapton the lead, they now had to dig deep to make sure of the win during the final 15 minutes of the game.
Saffron Walden did push for a very late leveller. But, the home team’s solid defence would only concede one further chance. With Sam Deering managing to get to a flick on, on the edge of the Clapton box. But, the alert and outrushing Jack Francis would make another big save, one versus one with the Saffron Walden number ten, to make sure of the win. This was a very hardworking and industrious team performance from Clapton Community this evening, as they got that important first league win of the season, courtesy of a fantastic winner from Andre Odeku, who made a really good impression on this game. Saffron Walden did creates some very good chances, however. With my player of the match in Clapton goalkeeper Jack Francis making some hugely important saves. Special mentions must also go to Julian Austin, Jordan Gent and Jamal Obeng on their notable performances on Tuesday.
