Wormley Rovers FC 1-0 Everett Rovers FC: (My match report from Wormley Sports Club)

Wormley Rovers faced Everett Rovers on Tuesday evening at Wormley Sports Club, in a Spartan South Midlands Football League Premier Division fixture. After exiting the FA Vase on Saturday, Wormley Rovers, who started this league fixture in 13th place in the league table, were looking to bounce back. Everett Rovers started this match in 16th place in the standings. This step 5 match was won 1-0 by Wormley Rovers.

After Everett had created a good early chance, soon afterwards Ryan Stevenson’s lofted forward pass to the Everett box was expertly laid off by Junior Appiah to Hadley Gleeson, whose low effort was well kept out by Ibrahim Rashid. After that Wormley chance, Everett Rovers would start to be the more creative team. And after Everett forward Tanel Ayvaz had played the ball across from the right to Jay Puzey inside the Womley penalty area, he would work the ball onto his left foot before hitting a low effort behind, off Carlos Simeon’s right-hand post. And then soon afterwards, before the first half would finish in a competitive manner, Everett Rovers player Harley Sells would run onto the ball down the right flank, before pulling the ball back towards Jay Puzey, inside the Wormley box. His powerful effort on goal was well parried away by Carlos Simeon.

Into the action from the second half now. And, after a positive start by Wormley, they would manage to create the first chance of the second half. Centre-forward Junior Appiah would, after holding off an Everett defender well inside their penalty area, cleverly back-heel the ball into the path of Hadley Gleeson. From inside the centre of the box he would power an effort wide of Ibrahim Rashid’s goal. Then very soon after that chance and still early on in the second half, Wormley would take the lead. The hardworking Junior Appiah would run onto a lofted pass in behind the Everett Rovers defence. And inside their penalty area he would battle well, under pressure, to get an effort away on goal. The very experienced forward’s effort took a deflection off an Everett defender before going into the back of the goal, 1-0.

In what was a very competitive game of football, the Wormley Rovers defence, who were led really well by captain Louie Offer, would have to dig deep to try and frustrate the visiting team. And following an Everett set-piece and then an effort from inside the home team’s penalty area by Jay Puzey, which was saved by Carlos Simeon, Wormley would do a great job of really frustrating the Everett forwards, although they did go on to create some further opportunities. However, so did Wormley as well, who went on to record an important three points this evening.

My overall player of the match award goes to Junior Appiah, who put in a real shift up front for the home team, scoring the winning goal, bringing others into play and chasing down every ball. Captain Louie Offer alongside the whole Wormley defence also put in very strong performances. For Everett Rovers, I thought that their player of the match was their commanding captain and central-defender Tom Ward.
