I caught up with Welwyn Garden City manager Gavin Kelsey recently, ahead of his first season as manager of Welwyn Garden City, in the Southern Football League Division One Central. I wish Gavin and Welwyn Garden City all the very best for the season ahead. 

Could you talk to me about some of last season, in what was a memorable final season as manager of Cockfosters?

Gavin: Unreal final season with Fosters – the hard work that went into getting us to three finals was massive just a shame we didn’t end it with a trophy.

A special season that will live long in the memory! It was some season.

What was your standout moment from your time at Cockfosters FC?

Gavin: We had some great moments over the four years – built up a great relationship with the chairman & club. On the pitch my thoughts lead to victories in the Vase but also massive wins in the league last season at clubs who finished in the top five positions. 

You’ve since become the head-coach of Welwyn Garden City. How are you feeling about the season ahead, in the Southern Football League Division One Central?

Gavin: Very much looking forward to getting the season started.

Pre season has gone well after the recruitment was done. Fixtures are out & we face Hadley in the first league game who we know well so yeah buzzing.

What are some of your personal hopes for Welwyn Garden City during the 2026/27 season?

Gavin: Personal hopes are we want to play the way we have in pre season & push as hard as possible in this league. We are at a good club & we want to give them something to cheer about this coming season.

What are some of your thoughts on this season’s Southern Football League Division One Central?

 Gavin: Thoughts on the league are that it’s a tough one with some big clubs looking to bounce back up. A number of others who are playoff contenders as well will be be in the mix – all in all a very competitive league. Would say as well it’s a very local league – so good local derbies that will pull in the crowds. Management & players are desperate to get going!
