After winning their last two matches London Fennecs faced Basildon Town at The Terence McMillan Stadium on Saturday afternoon in a Thurlow Nunn League First Division South fixture. London Fennecs started this league match in 20th place in the league table after ten league matches played, with Basildon Town starting this game in eighth place in the standings, after 13 league matches played. The second meeting between these sides this season, Basildon Town would win this game 4-0.
Early on during this game it was proving to play out in a cagey fashion, in difficult rainy conditions. After Basildon Town had hit a free-kick effort on target, London Fennecs would (in the 26th minute of the game) come very close to taking the lead. With Yasser Boughrira lifting a pass over the Basildon defence into the path of centre-forward Abdelaziz Khefacha, who from just inside the penalty area but slightly off balance, would power an effort off Joe Durrant’s left-hand post. Then in the 35th minute of the game, from a set-piece Basildon Town would take the lead. As Robbie Scanlon’s well delivered corner-kick into the London Fennecs box was headed down by James O’Brien, into the feet of Abidemi Lamina, who turned quickly before finishing low and powerfully into the goal, 0-1.
Basildon Town would then double their advantage before half-time. Following on from a London Fennecs free-kick at one end of the pitch, Basildon Town would counter forward with the ball. In the end and from out on the right-hand side of the pitch, Lucas Willison would play the ball towards Abidemi Lamina, who from just inside the home team’s penalty area, would curl a low effort in composed fashion into the bottom right-hand corner of Saeed Pirmoradi’s goal, 0-2.
During the opening stages of the second half, from out on the left flank Basildon Town player Charlie Bott would whip a deep cross to the back post of Saeed Pirmoradi’s goal, as the London Fennecs goalkeeper saved with his feet from Freddie Smyth’s volleyed effort. However, soon afterwards Matt Knight’s Basildon Town side scored their third goal of the afternoon. The ball would roll into the path of Abidemi Lamina, who from the right-hand side of the home team’s penalty area, would see his low effort across goal be turned home by the sliding Charlie Bott from close range, 0-3. And things got even better for Basildon Town, who then got their fourth goal of the game. With a long throw-in from the left flank into the busy London Fennecs penalty area eventually coming to Freddie Smyth. His initial effort was blocked by a defender, but the ball would then rebound into the goal off him, 0-4.
Basildon Town would continue to play well during the remainder of the game. After Charlie Bott had flicked on a long ball into the path of Basildon forward Abidemi Lamina, he would just manage to get in front of a defender to the ball, and from the edge of the London Fennecs box his placed effort would go narrowly wide of the goal. Both Abidemi Lamina and Jake Littmoden would go close to making it 5-0 to Basildon Town late on, but in the end the scores would remain 4-0 to the visiting team. This wasn’t the home team’s day today, but real credit to a strong Basildon Town side who in very difficult and rainy conditions played well, defended well and put in a fine team performance to win this game in convincing fashion.
My player of the match award goes to highly influential Basildon Town forward Abidemi Lamina, who with two goals and one assist put in a great performance today.
