Camden United OG’s 2-1 Regent Legend: (My match report from Market Road Pitches)

Looking to continue their unbeaten start to the season, league leaders Camden United OG’s faced Regent Legend at Market Road Pitches on Monday evening, in a Division 3 fixture of the Islington Midweek Football League. Camden United OG’s would record a hard-fought 2-1 win.

After a cagey opening 20 minutes to this game, Camden United OG’s would go on to create the first chance of the match, when Omar Mohamed had played the ball across to Ali Abdalla on the edge of the Regent Legend penalty area. On the turn the Camden forward’s effort would go narrowly over. A couple of minutes later however, and Camden would take the lead. A Camden corner-kick delivery into the Regent Legend box was cleared outside of the penalty area, as Suleban Elmi would lay the ball off into the path of captain Amar Suleiman. And from close to 25 yards out from goal and from a difficult angle, he would power an accurate low effort across goal into the bottom left-hand corner of the net, 1-0.

Regent Legend’s press had been very good, and they would soon start to improve in their play. After their impressive number 10 had knocked the ball past a Camden defender down the right flank, he would surge forward into the penalty area before whipping an effort just around goalkeeper Aryan Salimi’s right-hand post. Then soon after, Regent Legend would draw level. Their number 10 had gone on another good run with the ball, before taking the ball to the edge of the Camden penalty area, where his looping effort (I believe that the ball had taken a deflection off a Camden player) would go over the goalkeeper and into the goal, 1-1.

Right on the stroke of half-time Camden United OG’s would retake the lead. Amar Suleiman would step in to win the ball before taking it forward the short distance to the edge of the Regent Legend box, where he was challenged by a defender. However, Camden’s captain had just managed to help the ball on to Ayyub Bana down the left-hand side of the penalty area, and he in turn would quickly play the ball across to Ali Abdalla, who skilfully worked the space before whipping a really good effort into the back of the net, 2-1.

The second half was very well contested by both sides, although the creativity on the ball just wasn’t quite there for either side. We had to wait until the last ten minutes of the game until there was any real action inside of either penalty area. With Camden goalkeeper Aryan Salimi making a very brave bit of goalkeeping following a set-piece into the Camden box, where Regent Legend had committed a lot of players forward. In the end though Camden United OG’s would defend well to get another three points in the league, in what was a cagey game of football overall. For the second game running, my Camden United OG’s and overall player of the match award goes to their captain, Amar Suleiman, whose tackling, tenacity and quality on the ball was so important to his side. A player who puts in so much hard work in deep and central areas, he was involved in both of Camden’s goals this evening. My Regent Legend player of the match was their number 10.
